La question des musées, 1892.

The article by Antonin Proust is a well-documented presentation of the current state of French museums, which were in need of administrative reorganization in order to fulfill their mission as repositories of national art treasures and centers for public education. His analysis is based upon the Louvre, created as a national museum by the Convention in 1791. Proust criticizes the inappropriate way in which the original interiors were transformed into museum galleries, and deplores government disdain for the decorative arts. The author emphasizes the need for budget allocations for the museums, presenting the report on that subject which he had submitted to the Chambre des députés the previous year, and will be used when the budget for 1893 is discussed.
